There was chaos in the first half of the 20th century. The Confucian intellectuals looking for parts and warlords sought imperial power. The nationalist Kuomintang, led by Sun Yat-sen, the forerunner is a power base in southern China, while the Chinese Communist Party was founded in 1921 in Shanghai.
